China passport photo size & rules
China uses an unusual 33x48mm format for passport and visa photos, which at 300 dpi corresponds to 390x567 pixels. The Chinese visa application in particular is strict about pixel dimensions, typically requiring an image between 354x472 and 420x560 pixels, so the 390x567 target sits comfortably inside the accepted range. Because 33x48mm is narrower and taller than the European 35x45mm rectangle, photos cut for other countries usually fail the automated Chinese visa photo checker.
The background must be plain white with no borders, and the head must be positioned with specific margins: the head height should be about 28 to 33mm and the width about 21 to 24mm, centred with a small gap above the hair. Face the camera directly with a neutral expression and mouth closed, both eyes open and clearly visible, ears ideally shown, and no hair obscuring the face. Glasses that cause glare or tinted lenses are not accepted, and head coverings are generally not permitted unless worn for religious reasons with the full face visible. For online Chinese visa applications, the digital photo must also meet a minimum and maximum file size.
