Why the focus box matters
Most resizing tools crop from the centre of the frame. That is fine when your subject happens to be in the middle and disastrous when it is not: a 16:9 cover cropped to 9:16 loses two-thirds of its width, and whatever was off-centre — a face, a product, a headline — goes with it. Locking a focus box tells every crop what it is not allowed to lose, and the crop window slides to keep that area in frame instead of slicing through it.
Safe areas are not decoration
Every vertical format has a strip at the top for the status bar and profile row, a rail on the right for the like and share buttons, and a block at the bottom for the caption. YouTube stamps a duration badge over the bottom-right of your thumbnail. Those regions are drawn over your own artwork here, and if the subject you locked lands underneath one, the preview says so before you export rather than after you post.
