Italy passport photo size & rules
Italy uses the 35x45mm format (foto tessera) for passports and the electronic ID card (CIE), equal to 413x531 pixels at 300 dpi. Italian requirements follow the ICAO biometric standard, so the face should occupy about 70-80% of the frame, with the head measuring roughly 32-36mm from chin to crown. Italy publishes detailed photo guidance (from the Ministero dell'Interno and Polizia di Stato) with example images showing correct and incorrect framing.
The background must be plain, uniform, and light, usually white or a light grey, with no shadow, gradient, or object behind the head. Face the camera directly with a neutral expression and mouth closed, both eyes open and clearly visible, and keep the head level, not tilted. Italy asks that the whole face, from the top of the head to the shoulders, is shown in sharp focus with natural skin tones. Glasses should be removed where possible; if worn, there must be no reflection or tinted lenses. Head coverings are only accepted for religious reasons and must leave the full face uncovered.
Pixohub formats your Italian passport or CIE photo to 413x531 pixels following the biometric standard directly in your browser, so the image is never uploaded and stays private on your own device, and the tool is free. Italian requirements and the CIE photo process are updated over time by the interior ministry and local comuni. Always verify the current official specifications with your comune or on the Polizia di Stato website before printing or submitting your photo.
